Chikondi Banda
Apps and payments editor. Based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Writes about the phones and the money that actually circulate in the region.
Background
Chikondi Banda started in print, covering telecoms and mobile money for a business weekly. Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba were his first beat. Betting apps came later, and they turned out to run on the same rails: a phone number, a wallet, a payout.
He has reported on Android apps and payment channels across Malawi and its neighbours since 2017. He works in English and Chichewa.
How he tests
- He takes the file from the operator, not from a mirror.
- He reads the package name, the version and the permission list before installing.
- He installs on a budget Android phone, because that is what most readers hold.
- He goes through registration to the point where the country rule is visible.
- He reads the country terms for the payout cap and the withdrawal rule.
- He writes down what the operator does not publish, instead of guessing it.
What he refuses to write
No invented licence number. No bonus figure without a source. No download counter that was typed rather than counted. Where a country publishes nothing, the page says so.
His rule of thumb. If a fact cannot be pointed at, it does not go on the page. A gap is honest. A guess is not.
What he covers here
- The Premier Bet Android file: version, size, permissions, install steps.
- Country differences: currency, age, payout caps, welcome offers.
- Payments: which channels are named publicly and which are not.
- The iPhone route and how it differs from Android.
